Derrick Chachare:

And he got to that point, they all come in the room, the brothers are hiding down the hallway waiting to see my reaction. And I was like, okay, you don't have to play football, son, whatever you want to do, we're gonna support you. And he was surprised everybody else was surprised. Now, I was surprised I didn't have another kid that didn't want to play football. Because they saw how, oh, there you go, go birds, how hard you had to grind, to be average. And to be exceptional want to go to college and beyond that, given the percentages Look, man, less than 1% Less than half a 1% get opportunity to go to college, let alone and fail. And so Mark has ended up being in the Marines for six years. So like, grinding harder, they're playing football, you know, but then, you know, Andre, and then Dante the two younger guys fell into more of me coaching, being there, seeing it running around doing all that stuff, fell in love with the game. And man as a as a dad, as a parent. And as a guy that raised five young men, I couldn't be more proud of all of them, especially the ones that forgot and Andres had a tough road to stay in the league to get in the league. And man, it's just there's no setbacks. If you can't tell him he don't belong. Or here's his part whatever role it might be playing seven or eight games this year. Coach's kid goes in there as first to Mountain West. Losing DB and then don't get a chance to get drafted which was a shock to him everybody his agency all of that story that they ended up driving in the other corner that played with him in San Jose State got played one year and I've seen him since but the first store made a mistake a fire that whole scouting staff there to the next day they dragged around do but Andre journeys history. Right. He's bounced around on some foods and gets there and impressed everybody. And when you're smart as a dB, he go in as our as the only position he hasn't plays it's outside corners when he's played all his life. Okay, you play nickel, this guy motion you got to do this. This set of receivers you got to do the tight ends here in the backyard. Gotta be pretty smart. Not saying that the outside corners don't they don't want to just cover guys. I was surprised knowing him as a dB. They moved in the safety cost saving plan in the box. I see him coming down that thank you first. The first play last year when they played Dallas, he came up and pop Z and almost knocked the ball out like that my son is a little covered dude. But when you there you got to be there. You know what I mean? So his journey is is something you could write a book about, man. It's awesome. And we got to get him on here one day once the season's over.

LIncoln:

Absolutely. Because you know, I'm gonna be I'm gonna be truthfully honest, man. Every time I have seen a highlight of Philadelphia just during this year. I don't know. And I don't know if he's with the team the whole year, especially lately. I just remember there was some plays that he obviously makes and he's to me as a fan of football just stands out man. Like I see him on the field. Like yeah, and to me when I think about it was like, How come we really don't get a little more like, there must be a lot of politics behind the scenes because some you can tell certain guys can do certain things. Like who's a cat from the patriots who has been nothing but a special team where his whole career. Oh, Jay, it was Jackie what's his favorite?

Derrick Chachare:

Jackie, Jackie? O lineman Oh my son. Yeah, later Yes. Later, Jackie. Unbelievable. That dude has made a good living and he's been the best guy just playing special teams there's a place and you see Andre do stuff that other people are like wow, you know they you see other guys in there in the spot he will be in in some cases that you know, I saw dudes standing nother guy standing on the field when the place is going online. But then, like you say there's some politics. Oh, I know his Old or if that's part of football man it then it don't it don't know what you're doing you got to stay focused on that and don't let that worry about. Yeah, you know, so it's it's interesting man. I mean the crazy the craziest story was this last year he was with nd now the whole Philly basically the whole Philly staff came from nd when Andre was there on the practice squad. Right Andre was it for a couple games, but they saw Him every day. So last year no. Yeah, last year. He was with Andy made the 53 man roster of last cut day, the next day, and they released him and brought in two corners. Both on six feet six one. Yeah, always looking for that bigger better deal. Soon as they released them, Philly picked them up. Because those coaches doing kept me played the whole year guy they got banged up the last preseason game this year. So then a little struggle to get back on and all but he's played this game. Those two guys in the brought in, you know, he claimed somebody off waivers, they got to be on the roster for two weeks, they both were going after that. I just think like this as a coach, or GM. I brought you in B I replaced the guy that I had just seen all training camp earn a spot. And I release him to bring you in. And you don't pan out.

LIncoln:

Yeah, that's some there's some there's some answer to that man. Like I mean, like you brought in not just one guy, but you brought in two. And then you were done with them. And it's like, grass ain't always greener, man. Like, I mean, cats got us.

Derrick Chachare:

I like to say this, my eyes don't lie to me. I've seen this with my own two eyes. You tell me what I want you to show me some old stuff. But what I've just watched. My eyes do not lie to me. All right, guess what that that last year, Philly, everybody in their secondary and nd probably got hurt one time or another? So they were down and through that karma do? That's crazy.

LIncoln:

What do you see? Like as, as Andre goes through this? I mean, he can't play football forever. I mean, we know that, that they either come sooner or later. And as you see him, you know, is he a future coach? Is he Do you see him doing that? Do you see him? Or just, you know, say, Hey, I'm done with football on to the next thing and building up his own thing.

Derrick Chachare:

You know, to me, I try not to go that route yet. Because I told him, I tell him this, this the advice I give give to him. One or two things is going to happen with your football career. No team is gonna want you no matter what you do. Or your body's gonna say I'm done. I say when that point comes, what do you have planned? And so he's got a few business ideas. What's up, he's got a pretty creative wife who's got some business ventures now that she's doing pretty well with. So the flip side of that is Andres like me, and like you. I mean, I don't care what we do. What's our windows, and then now we're family. First, he loves his kids. He's got to know he would rather do something that would be close to home. I see this though. This is from his dad and probably knows better than he knows. For example, the last game I think he was, yeah, he wasn't active for the NFC Championship. Especially team coaches telling him to coach up the guys that are out there in his spot. And he's like you know what, I have to coach him up, but make sure these guys are doing this and that. Yeah. So being as smart is football IQ. I can definitely see the coaching part. But being a family man, you know, our coaches bumped around that I mean, that might be the number one factor whether he coaches or not. You know that I know a lot of colleges, a lot of NFL teams might bring him on as Assistant Special team or DB coach. I mean, he's created some great relationships with some coaches. And so that's when he got a note replace.

LIncoln:

I don't mean No, I'm just saying like, the relationships you have during this journey. They are absolutely imperative to the future of whatever you're trying to do like and people don't even think of out that, right? You don't I'm saying? Like, I remember when I was playing, like I literally could care less about like, you know nothing against Terry Malick tournament I was probably a great guy. But I told him I was like, man, get away from me with that. And then I find myself do when it's all said and done. And I'm like coaching. I remember I literally reached out to Terry Malley, because he's at Santa, you know what I'm saying? So it's, you gotta take, you got to build those links, because you never know who you're going to call or who's going to need your help, or vice versa? Yeah,

Derrick Chachare:

I agree.

LIncoln:

How was and so when you look, so now that you look at what you created, and you step back? Is it more than what you anticipated it was going to be? Or are you still in shock? And how far and how well, your boys have done? And the reason I asked that is because you've got five boys, five good boys. Exactly. And five black boys that the you know, what the struggles that we're dealing with, with this country? You know, it's, you know, you just hope you can keep them safe as long as you can. Right? Right. And when you step back and be like, Man, my boys are good. Like they're taking care of it. Like how does like just putting that in perspective? Like, what? So how do you feel about that?

Derrick Chachare:

So here, here's, here's a little twist of this. I joke about a couple of things about that, right? First of all, I like to say I'll go into a grocery store and complain. And oh, my wife likes you don't like this humor. I like I need to complain about a family fact. None of these families backspin at all. That's one. And then the other one that and you know this being a black man also in raising some young man. You hear this stereotyping of one in five black men? Yeah. And there's some statistics on that one in five. So I said name, pick one. Where do you want to go top to bottom? So I don't want to hear that. You know what I mean? It ain't a broken home. And ain't this ain't, you know, Dre call some flat? A little bit new coaching staff in San Jose, check this out. It's the I don't think there's bad intentions. But it's always the assumption of a black kid being from the inner city. Yes. Yes. You know, what the black is inner city? Chicago suburb, the Bronx, New, you know, so it was the coach there. And he's basically our inner city coach, and that offended me. You know,

LIncoln:

he's the black coach.

Derrick Chachare:

The one on the coaching staff? And I'm like, No, in the city, that guy from inner city, that guy, you know what I mean? Yeah, I don't, I don't think there's bad intentions with that. Because you can get the inner city kid from most places, you won't call them inner city kids, but people assume that you need a special guy to relate to them and relate to them and football in education, because that's what you're there for, you know, on and off the field stuff is, is choices. Yeah. And so every time I hear that inner city deal, I laugh inside, but I I just remember that that's the perception that a lot of people have, and no bad intentions. No, but

LIncoln:

But let me ask you this. Do you think it's because of their worldview and how they see things through their particular lens, for instance, my son is going through freshman football, right? And he meets a coach and is like, okay, the only way you plan is if I'm coaching. Once we got that agreement done, and I was on the staff, you know, it's interesting to hear. It's interesting to hear how guys without the strong without a strong football background and coaching less, because what I brought to the table and what they had, it's not apples and apples. Let's just be honest. Right? And right, they kept and I remember they asked, Why do you want to do this? So hey, man, I got a kid on this team. And I don't trust you guys to keep them safe. Let's just be honest with. Exactly. So. But once I was on the staff, it was interesting to hear how those guys talked about like those players on this team. They're like, Oh, these kids are so undisciplined, or this and that. And all those comments were aimed at the, at the black kids

Derrick Chachare:

99.9.

LIncoln:

And because he would make people come back with the comment that, you know, last year, we had a bunch of just great athletes who can just do what we told them to do. And I'm thinking to myself, I went back and looked at the film. Oh, no wonder they they you know, all those kids were on their little theater team and all those kids were white. And you know, it was and it's that same label that my son has gotten Mike, you're on the baseball team now. And I do my due diligence because I think personally, man, one of the most racist sports for black boys to try to get into, especially on this side of the country is baseball. Right? It's it's baseball. Yeah, I agree. And so now so when I saw one hit soon was baseball season time I had to go to the coach said, Hey, man, look, I'm not here to get in your business. I'm just here to ask you to make sure my kid gets a shot. That's it, right? I said, if you let him do his thing, and you didn't you coach him and you treat him like you treat all the other kids. I said, Did you be surprised what you get out of him? But I and I tried to set them let them know, Hey, man, people far too often dismissed these types of kids because of something they have in their mind. Right? You know what I'm saying? And I remember and he said, Hey, I'm not gonna give him anything. I said, I'm not asking you to give him anything. I'm asking him to make sure he gets a fair shot. That's a difference.

Derrick Chachare:

You know, check this our youngest son Dante is a quarterback. exceptional athlete. I mean, I'll tell you this. Andre might know better than Andre and that's the NFL guy. Right? Probably got the football brain IQ of men you put together okay intelligent alright. This is key like when he would come up when I was coaching in San Jose being drawn on the board tear Mary walked in the door your favorite play? You know what he say to tear man? Eight man or 11 Man that for is that for so I'm laid out there right now school

LIncoln:

Oh man.

Derrick Chachare:

A high school junior year just pass for 3400 ran for 900 Last schools coming through look at him just had a quarterback the year before they went to Nebraska from his school first day out of their mouth what are the positions you ever play receiver Naevi

LIncoln:

there it is the negative deficit that negative deficit thinking oh hey, well he obviously can't be a quarterback I mean, that talent we got to put that talent somewhere else you want to write

Derrick Chachare:

so it was a lot of look a lot of big programs. A what a barber. See? What about dB is like I want a shot to at least play quarterback. And then go from there. Nope. Then you know the the mid majors in the Portland State come through. We never had a guy like you, man. Yeah, we would love to have a quarterback. Hey, Dad, can we go take a mom dad? Can we go take a look report? Like he's there. And they opened up at Oregon this year. And probably he got a chance to win, but he's gonna put on the show. There my cozy that day. It's funny that you say that about baseball. And that relates to the black quarterback. But now think Jalen Hertz. And all these guys remember back in the day it was just I mean, go way back duck. Yep. Then you had Randall? Yep. Then you had Warren Moon. Who else Warren Moon. You just just 111 then you hit Michael Vick and in a couple of these guys came out now you got a good handful of guys now. A lot of those guys. Were pocket passers. Right. And Jalen Hertz. Take the guard view every day. Because you're a dual threat long some other guy Lamar and some more of these guys, your guy out here. Everybody's saying wait a minute. These guys put a lot of pressure on the defense just with their running ability. Oh, and they could throw the ball. Yeah. You know, so I think he's coming along man at the right time. 10 years ago, he probably would have been moved to dB receiver. But you know what they?

LIncoln:

You know what, though? Yeah, you right this day, and he probably, but I read this article on him. And it was specifically about his relationship with Saban. And it was that last year where Saban pulled him in, you know, and to basically win the whole season. Right? Right. And it was his mindset that the guys that Nick Saban said, hey, look, man, you need to work on throwing the football, like, let's just be honest. And the fact that he said that to him, gave him you know, and he took that and be like, Well, I'm not going to transfer I'm going to hang out for the year and I'm going to work on it here on the scout team. Alright, why not work on it with the best team in the country at Alabama? Right? Right. And then he took that to Oklahoma now the greater thing about that is is Peyton Manning even decided to go and say hey, man, I want to work with this kid. And two years later, look at this is what you got. Everybody wrote him off. Everybody said he couldn't throw and look at what are you waiting for him to fail? Ain't yeah and you know what's even and then think this is what the last three Super Bowls two of them have had black quarterbacks? Correct on both sides right? Yeah.

Derrick Chachare:

One or the other? No it is first time there's two black quarterbacks is it is history maybe. And that's

LIncoln:

what's up, man right that is crazy. So now the other question I want to ask you is is what's next for the Shoshu right family?

Derrick Chachare:

More football hey we get to watch a little spring game here I don't know when it's gonna be it I don't know if they actually gave a date. But we're gonna enjoy the moment man. I mean, I sent you a text the other day man and and you told me how you felt what I was feeling? Yup. And it's one of those things how much he plays if he plays there's a Super Bowl jersey with your name on my name think about that though you played everybody we know how many other guys you know this close personal that you did kick it with shed or hotel room or none lived in an apartment with winter this winter that went to the club and and working

LIncoln:

and just talking nothing man and like in a so what was the first surreal moment like when did that come to your head when you sent me that text message? Or was it just kind of like building like when they won the game like oh my goodness. My name is

Derrick Chachare:

going into the championship NFC it was like no emotions, no feeling I don't know what to feed. Hey, Dad, I'm gonna be an actor. Okay, no big deal. Then I go, Hey, when son's going to Super Bowl. I look good. And not watching that game. Now. Remember back to this game. Come out bang for bang. Then Niners quarterback get hurt. Yes. All right, Dan is starting to slip away from another quarterback get hurt. And I'm like, damn it down. It's like eight minutes left in the fourth quarter. I know the game over. Wife in the other room. We don't sit in the same room, watch football. I want to rewind, talk about details to let you know about. And I was like, my youngest son called reporting and then we say call me back. You know, I'm like, knowing that you know, eight minutes left ain't got a quarterback. This was over. But I didn't want to fill it there yet. And then it's like when the game was over. You see, actually they had a bigger picture him Andre on the sideline hugging one of the guys and I was like how am I supposed to feel right now? I'm like, oh, no, man. This is Hey, doll. Hey. Oh, no. And the wife goes, Just sounds going to the Super Bowl. She pointed me from another room. I said no, no, I said you're starting on Super Bowl. And then we give each other hug and we start calling all other brothers and they all screaming on the phone and it's crazy. They really hit us up. He sent us a picture of him holding the NFC Championship trophy. I got no tears but the wife was bawling. Like she's cried for like the next two hours on it. That emotion is so surreal man. I couldn't tell you I felt I couldn't show you how to fail. I don't think it could be recaptured. But it was just something I never felt before. And you know that's crazy with all ups and downs and football. The wins the losses and stuff. It's every kid that ever played football. ask them one question. What would be your ultimate goal? Playing football go to Super Bowl you know to the Super Bowl kid the kid that didn't want to be out there the kid that did everything to get out there? They all got the same answer. My son will be out there dog and then it's crazy cuz weather. Who knows? It's one of those things where he can be pulled up and elevated for the game or not. And all of that you don't know I don't care. Because everybody comes out that warms up he's gonna be out there that jersey all running around and I'm taking as many pictures as I can. Wait, are you going to be on the sideline? No, no, no, we're going to be in the stands but I do have a pass to go down on the field after. Oh, man. Hey, I'm bringing you bringing like faux pieces of confetti though when they were

LIncoln:

Oh, man. Yeah. Hey, so let me let me take even further back. The feeling that you have when he's going to the Super Bowl what it was the feeling when you had when he first signed

Derrick Chachare:

up So that one was a little different. Because Andre played in the NFLPA game Andre went to the NFL Combine and Andre was in the top 10 On every category I think except for benchpress which I don't know why at NFL Combine for corners the 44 For something a vertical 38 bra job 10 Five all of that man shuttle three nine and Agent great agency mid to late rounds that teams calls so didn't want to have a party and none of that because you just don't know and then if you didn't want to top three round guys, you don't want to have a bunch of people there because then they asked you all these points so it was just the wife and I think all the brothers no other family member know in law none of that were there waiting him are in the back room. And it's crazy. Round six getting a whole bunch of coals round seven in a whole bunch of call it some no move up I think that draft there's a couple of guys that fail later rounds that people put my DBS like other positions that they people thought that would be gone and so seventh round comes and goes they go from San Jose and they go this other guy and I was like DB I was like my son just broke down he was like that was like one of the next to the last bit

LIncoln:

he was also relevant.

Derrick Chachare:

Yeah. So one of the as a dad and knowing that it's not over let's see what happens by Look man, here's the deal so I'm gonna go call Get your free agent this as soon as the last pick was over this guy I got drafted to the Texas the Texas call. I'm gonna get you 50 guaranteed or X amount of dollars guarantee such since I'm a free agent deal. That was like it like I'm going there. I don't know, this other day. But he probably had about 10 or 11 teams that wanted to bring him in. I'm like why none of these dudes draft you. And so ended up going to Texas and stayed there for a year, almost a year. And then you saw the ugly part of football. Andre gnomad just had their baby in the offseason at first sun and was there too. They stopped them before Thanksgiving. They called him Tuesday. We're gonna release you towneplace 30 business. Now luckily enough
