combined test will go to NFL PA to pass breakups forced the fumble, play great. That warrants you getting drafted, then they don't. Then it's like, can I, you know, luckily beforehand to get to deepen that conversation team start calling wanting to bring him in, you know, so you pride yourself on having to answer what's the right answer and wrong answer this to answer that to get us through to the next phase of this issue. As a dad, that's the number one thing you set out to do. And so that was probably harder than that emotion. That was just, I mean, that was gut wrenching. Do I mean, you watch your grown son cry? Like, what did I do wrong? Did I do something wrong? What's going on and, you know, then, you know, that kind of helped mold him into the guy that a person needs is and the player is all these little setback and all of this stuff, he's teams and upper management do they make mistakes, they're not perfect. They get some their head, they want to go with that. And you get opportunity to attempt it, move on, or even get better from the next phase of your life. So I take my hat off to him, man, he's a special guy. And whatever opportunity he gets, man, he takes a run with it like you wouldn't believe.

To hear you explain that in that much detail. And the whole time you're thinking man, I've got to guide my son on one reassuring that he's gonna be okay to it's got God's got a plan, and three, man, all you can do is put in that work.

I mean, that's, it's hard to explain that. At those times. I mean, you know, you come in and somebody's crying, are you sitting there when the last or it's different because it's a draft and this you got to be special to be there. And they asked you to do special stuff to get opportunity. And you do that. And then it don't happen. It's like there's a lot of people fold their tip pack up and leave, you know, I'm done with this manager's hurt, are getting cut by Indy, he made the 53. It cuts you to bring in some guys that they ended up cutting three weeks later. And it's like I couldn't do this folded up my tent. But he goes and Philly. It was probably last year in my opinion, and I'm pretty smart. Probably five tackles away from being all Pro and specialty. He played the Oculus last year. I mean, every phase kickoff kickoff return,

Man, how did it I don't mean to interrupt Derrick how do they gauge that? Who goes to the Pro Bowl on special teams? Like how do they gauge it is a numbers.

I think there's probably a formula they have probably reps plays made. I mean, you you know, you'll be on the park team as a downer, go down and stop the ball inside the five, three time that's special. Dude you know what I mean? So that in tackles Of course, if you run it down or punch or kick off you making tackles, I'm sure that's kind of part of what plays into it. So, you know, and it was it's funny, because Andre, last year after like, second third game, he was gonna get doubled every time. Every time that was the whole year, and he still made plays. And so you know, he go and talk to the tech people in Detroit, or Indy? Oh, yeah. You're on scouting report he go. I said, Son, when they're telling you you're on a scouting report. You're important. You're important.

Yeah, exactly. And a lot of people you know, just average fans listening don't know but you guys football player. If your name come up on the opposing team scouting report, you're not a mark man thing. Nothing crazy, but they don't know what you had at all time.

They have a house in fresh the right are in Fresno, Fresno. Yes, they're there. We don't know if that's going to be permanent home base. Of course we're trying to lay them nurture them that way. It'd be great because, you know, our football. What was unique about my family was the football I played and coached in was normally done during the spring and summer. So guess what, I don't get to miss their stuff. And so very similar. I mean, dude, I couldn't ask for a better life. I don't care where I am in I got to do I don't think I missed the football game with these guys. And you know, my time was to go in the spring and the summer go out and work contribute to the grocery bill. And you know, and they had a little time off normally from their football so they got to go to some games. And I mean it's a blessing man and right now is him and his wife wants to go do something my oldest son his son is in the second grade so I call it grandpa daycare. During the fall, you know, I get to go because I'm off work. You know, we'll have a meeting or a tryout or a cap like that. You know, a lot of it was zoom, we'd have a tryout and stuff like that. We'll be going the weekend but I get to pick up grandkids from school. Take them home, teach desaturate waves, then send them off to Mom and Dad. Come on, man. Okay, I'm living my best life though.

And then Andre has two Drayden and Rylo remember I remember that conversation you're asking about the daughter and meeting the boyfriend look man I got a granddaughter that's to it she loves Creole like you wouldn't believe. fair skinned that look, I'm trying to say the right words without custom and everybody tripped because they're trying to come over I got some weights at the house. I go in there and start living there. But I like what you're doing in my granddaughter is curly hair. This is fair scaling green eyes. Yeah, dude. I'm going on a first date. She gonna be telling Well, you gotta meet my grandpa. What about your dad? No, you got to meet my grandpa first so that I'm getting ready for a dog. I'm in shape. I look like I can play football right now. Man A since I had a granddaughter and we'll just leave it at

three to one T? Yeah, man. Like there was a I looked at some of the old picture like, oh my god, once I lost all the weight now that I'm down to 255 The only thing I got to do is keep up with my heart and my kid in high school. That's it. Yeah. Because he, bro he talked about asking for it. Man if I can if I can't knock him out.

Your trouble. I know, okay, I got better for you. So I mean, I got I didn't get a 300. But you know, I was around at 255 to 61. I played I got up to about 280 When I started coaching. And but I was still lifting. I was a strength coach and had these guys working out kind of the same stuff we did that Fred had us doing. Walk around doing all that on school. And then my youngest son, there's no longer Andre Andres off in college. All of us guys at work in order Marines or whatever they doing? He's a quarterback. Then let's go through so you got to run the routes. Call a wife and we're like just to Hey, so I'm talking to a couple of guys. Oh, man, just run the top of the routes. Like what? Oh, like the last? Hey, hey, hey, did you know he wants to throw the ball deep work on the arm and throw the ball 60 yards so I'm in a lot better shape to now we go on throw it's a little better man.

When you said that, let's go through them. Like the first thing in my mind was who can run these routes?

And exactly, oh, it was there. It was

and I literally did that one day. Oh, and so I took my little brother I took my my little I took my youngest son Yeah. My oldest one little brother. And I said I just need you to run these routes. Just follow the cones like I literally set up two routes. Okay, follow the cones stay with stay inside the cone and just run these routes and then look look back all right after you pass the last comb and all it was do balls hitting the ground balls hitting him in the head ball was hitting him in the arm ball was hit. I was like the whole point of this is you know catch a couple right? Like you don't have to drop all of them. And he's like, I don't want to run these routes. I said we need to work on this. This is something that has to happen. And then did he started throwing a fit he's like

yeah, I've been there man and you know you get a guy that's a quarterback and he wants to be command. Hey snapper right on the ramp. The run off and do this come back to a man. So the wife was like, she get over work, dude, I'm left hand On the couch or on the floor is likely doing something about that and run routes you to overhead. I say well, okay, we go out there and run. Like they'll sit there and complain and I'm hurting. But I'll tell you this. And I do it now with these guys. You know, Andre gets home, I have a little gym out there that I do, and we work out. A lot of athletes college, high school, even some young youth groups, football, basketball, sports, a lot of speech. I'm sending you a couple of video clips. But we do we worked it out where we have guys from everywhere. And every once in a while. 100 want to go out to the field and we got I'm like, you know, brother ain't there. I can throw no passes for y'all, man. That's your little brother. So it's on both ends, man. But when they all there, it works out beautiful. And but here's the thing. Since the oldest who's now 33, maybe 34. I don't even know I got so many kids. Basketball guy. They made rebound pass balls out. All the way to the finish reading this little college ball to my youngest son. If you ask me. I'll never tell you no. I've dragged myself off the couch. So many times. Hips need to be replaced. At least they feel like it showed I can't throw the ball back back hurt and hamstrings don't work. My knees Oh, never hurt not aching. Because I ran four routes. Ain't gonna say no. If that's all you want me to do? I'll help you out.

That's what's that? And you know, when you think about a man, all you got as your kid, right? And and then when you even think about it even deeper than that. How do you want them to remember you? Exactly. Because that example of how they remember you was going to be the same example that they instituted or they implement with their kids as they get older.

It what's amazing about that, and why when you said that was when I get to see my two sons that are fathers, the time they put in with their kids of the love of course, but basically anything they want to do. Like Moses signed in and he goes out there and his son of course look like he's following the basketball route. Well, he asked your dad everybody's family got to play football. And the dad was go Yeah, play you know, you know, I'm a discipline and everything football teach you. But this didn't want to go out and shoot like every day. I mean, little seven year old got some skills. And so you tell him a not a basketball part because every time I take him to the gym, he wants to start working out. You know, I make it fun. Can't do this or chase Garen for doing this. It ain't no just grind workout. I don't want to go to gym today, grandpa. Well, I gotta go because I got to meet these other people. Then you can go jump on the boxes. Have some fun. Tell me how many times you can. I can count over 100 Let's see. Okay, just so he made the jump. Hey, I'm getting the workout in you don't even know. So little stuff like that. And that's the second part of and you hear that? Oh, the sun mitt. You say Well, I'm just gonna drop you off. And grandpa is he gonna take it work out? Because that was the fun thing with with that. And I know you're gonna experience this if you haven't. Yep. If you got a buddy or a friend that believes in doing stuff the way you do it. Try to incorporate him into work and your kids. Yeah, because they get tired of us. Oh, they do. You make me do my homework. Make me clean up my room. Make me watch TV go to work, go to school may do this. I want to listen to you out here working out. Now my kids I could never say got to that point. But it was good for somebody to push them that little extra bit. Believing in the same stuff. I believe you know, safety first. He's my kids type stuff. And having a wife that would say, Did you tell your dad you want to play football? I don't want to go run in the bleachers. Well, your dad's going to run it's like when I was a my last few years of playing on fiber was my youngest son was two years old. He's running up on bleachers trying to hang with the brothers and doing it because everybody else is doing Yeah, my leg is shaking. Oh yeah. Drink some water. So know that that's been instilled in embedded in their brains to use all this old data of yours painting this picture of all you guys get on my back and see if I can do 10 Push ups, doing extreme stuff and including all you guys and I see my kids doing Right now with their kids, dude, hey, the shoulders went so bad. I pat myself on the back.

There you go. That's what's up there. I mean, do you I just keep all I keep hearing is your legacy man. Like, and you know, and I know I'm a few years behind you in as far as with the kids, right? But I dream of having that. Let's just be honest, being honest with the man. And I think about it all the time, because my oldest daughter, you know, so my stepdaughter, my oldest, who was my daughter, right? She's 25. Man, she just turned 26. And I don't see any kids in her future anytime soon. Right. And so and then I just found out that I had another daughter when I was coaching in West Virginia, been in her life for past couple years. She's not playing on the same team. So I found that out, so I don't have to worry about that one. Now, I got these two knuckleheads living in the house, right. 15 and 13 I'm like, man, you know, 10 Give it 10 years.

I ain't rushing it. But you know, exactly.

I'm not saying there's a timetable on this. But you know, I want to see somebody's grandkid. I want to see my grandkids before something happens.

I mean, that's probably the ultimate to me. And my, in all the stuff I've done in my life, good and bad. Mostly good. I hope to say that's the ultimate life reward man, grandkids.

It is it I can see that now. Have you guys, let me ask you this. Have you in your wife ever watched the show? This is us?

What was your thought

Derrick Chachare: 16:43

it was unique. So a lot of stuff we've watched now. It's I'm telling you, man, somebody's been picketing my house, sitting there watching what we're doing, man. I'm like, like, the exact same stuff. You know, I see a lot of that in a lot of shows. And maybe there's a change of time, I guess, are these new generations. I mean, our generation and went through each other in that same time is, is different. We I mean, what our parents came through was the end of some crazy stuff for black people. And so we didn't grow up in it. I mean, but I grew up in the South. And so I saw a lot of it. When I come out to the West Coast, you don't see you. But you know, it's there. You know what I mean? And so, last few years ago, you see some crazy stuff coming, I would work with the guy we had in office. So it's like, man, you know, we've came a ways. I don't like to say a long ways we came aways, but it's some stuff out there. Now how have you prepared? Your kids that's going to be passing on generations to keep moving forward and enjoying this. All right. I don't want to look over your shoulder be worried about stuff all the time. But here's what you need to be aware of. Don't assume this don't apply to you. Because I got three kids with college degrees. You know, I got a guy that was a Marine. I got a guy that's doing bank loans. I got some successful kids. Oh, they're black. You know what I mean? One of those things. But we me and my wife both believe in education. We believe in being good people. I mean, the stuff you don't know about Andre and and Dante and Mitchell and their junior and Marcus's since they were kindergarteners, they volunteered at food drives, homeless shelters, all of that stuff. They did all of that. So you don't We don't care how bad you think it is at home or what you don't have or some this kid got over here. You go into school over here, type stuff. There's people that still need a helping hand. We all Andre does so much stuff and don't want credit a lot of NFL guys do. And that's not the stuff they want a headline. You know what, uh, you know, should we did the same thing. You asked us to go speak to some young kids were playing no questions asked, Hey, go over here and run this camp. No questions asked, Hey, this kid wants some shoes or some gloves, no questions asked. You know, stuff like that. We've embedded in these guys to continue to move this, this their place in this country and this time in a positive way. And so I think they've all did a great job. I mean, my oldest son is coaching at a school that is funny just got a kid that transferred there because his mom got a teaching job there. This kid is a junior in high school. Never been in a lockdown and all the other have basketball players on the team like man is happy, like every two weeks or so miski Terrible. So he's at a school like that, oh, I'm talking about the school being bad or good. But he's they're changing kids like my son this first year as the head coach last year, first time in 30 years, 25 years, they won 20 games. And he got three kids in the college, cared the second highest GPA and all the sports team for his team.

Oh, man, I just want to make sure that we recognize that because, dude, that is a black man, making sure and looking out for his players, and all aspects of life, giving him the tools the Hey, man, this is so temporary, right? It's what you need to equip yourself the tools after this particular segment of your life, you need to be ready, and black men need to keep and that message can't resonate more than from another black man.

Derrick Chachare: 21:00

Think about this, this thing's made up. I don't think there's a white kid on the team. Mexican kids, black kids, Asian kids. on varsity. He's got 38 of those guys have jobs. They put on a 3.0 or high. They're playing high school basketball on bar. So think about that. I mean, if people you know, couldn't put a pair of shoes on, they had to go to school, go to work, or go to practice. They go to work a couple of days a week. It ain't supposed to be that way. It ain't supposed to be that way. But and then the carrot, the positive for that and getting what? No, what I tell kids as a high school coach, if you want to play football, beyond high school, is probably the easiest sport to do be on high school. Coach, what do you mean, our guy ain't got enough to go to UCLA. I didn't say you can go to UCLA. But there's Junior College. There's Junior College as division three, Division Two, one double A division one. There's somewhere for you to play. But you know where it starts. Got to add a grades.

You know, I could the one year I coached. So I coached a couple years in high school. But I coach at this one powerhouse. And the one thing that disappointed me the most was their approach to kids who were getting scholarships. It was the kids are going they don't care about nobody unless they're going to be one if they're going to be one. That's who that's who that's who they you know, they pump up you know, they talk about all the time but they never ever tried to tell the kid Hey, man, there are other alternatives. Not everybody's gonna get a division one scholarship. There's a division three school, there's a division two school, you got options if you want to keep playing and further your education. But I do remember, the kids were like, yeah, man, coach doesn't tell us about that stuff.

Derrick Chachare: 23:01

Right? They don't, they don't. But like you say it's the front runners. I'll tell you this. I don't know how much time we got. I got I got one good high school story. I actually coach high school for two years. And the reason the way I got into that my wife used to be a special ed teacher and the principal there at elementary school. He was now at this high school. It's very similar to my son's High School demographics and all of that not in the greatest part of town. That in the worst part of town if there is a worst part of somebody living there, it's alright I guess. But he called my wife was like what your husband be interested in coaching. And he was like, Oh, over there. He's like, probably Colin. So I knew his son his son played with Andre whenever we played against each other in high school. His son was a I think he played with Kansas City couple of years he was injured on practice score, but when they won the Super Bowl, I think he got a ring so good friends, right? That that the principal call me he said, Coach, hey, what's a news? Like, I need a favor. And that's how you hit because they know what kind of person I am. He said a movie at the high school. Yeah, yeah, I heard Yeah. It's I need a football coach. He goes Let me explain. I have some good guys. I have some guys little rough around the edges. I'm not worried about that. Whatever you need, I'll help you out. But we just finished a football season. This happened the last two years. This year. I have eight guys that play football just finished in December we go on Christmas break. They haven't been to school. This is like a march. And last year I had that and I had seven guys didn't even graduate high school after they just finished playing football. They just gave up on everything in the sense not because they couldn't go play football. Just because nobody's been Pushing the grades nobody to make me go to class. As long as I'm eligible for football, I'm not ineligible to after Christmas break. I'm cool. I need some help with that. So I get there and explaining guys who I am what I do. And I raised five boys, by my wife's a Mexican lady. So are you Mexican guys looking at this black guy? Like, I don't understand. I want to hear that. You know? So, you know, the coaches are coaches, man. And so I'm looking at different coaches certain way and all of that until they get to know here's the one thing I'm gonna tell you guys. It's gonna be very simple my rules are so I'm gonna tell you this. Give you the rules. I got your background, anything you do. Except for taking someone's like I said, then I'm across the line there. So when nobody, I mean, gang member kids, all of that stuff. I had an incident where a dad want to come ask me why I started playing Warhammer come flexing this and I said, You national son. But anyway, I don't want to get distracted. So I go in there and I talk I say, Here's my number. I put it on the board. And everybody's like, Oh, the coaches like coach on Bucha number that guy's gonna be crying, calling you and all of that. I was like, I ain't worried about that. These guys don't know I got their back that come in and time. Didn't really have any incidents there. But we ended up playing good game away from our little section championship. I had a kid go to University of Washington, I had a kid go to Northern Arizona, northern Colorado, and the kid go to dates, and handle scholarship football players in like 15 years. change the program around every kid graduated. And so what I did for those two years, I learned way back when I was in high school, kind of the Boys and Girls Club, where when I first started playing football in Texas, we went on this little overnight camping deal. Everybody who got his sleeping bag, nobody had one. I was sleeping out here in the weather in late May. It's like perfect. Besides the mosquitoes you'll be fine. So we get a little bonfire going. And I need you guys to know every guy here who they are, what they deal with on a day to day basis. And why are they playing football? So here's the questions I asked my favorite moment in football so far. worst moment in football. Tell us something about you. We don't know. Man, I had coaches in tears. They you don't know or understand what these kids go through. At some of these schools just to be at school every day. I had the toughest one was the guy that had the highest GPA didn't go to college, play football. But he called me like two years ago, just told me I got his master's from Fresno State dude, I was proud. Probably the guys that played football. His name was I can't think his name. I don't even want to say his name. But he goes, I live in a house. It's a two bedroom. There's seven of us. And my sisters get the bedroom and my other brothers have to sleep on the floor. And I was like we heard a couple of those other stories. But where we live, we've only had the power on for probably three months since I've been there since only now. I was like sure I'm about to come out the pocket. It goes but I'm fine with that. I mean, this dude's never late to anything. He's got the highest GPA on school team captain, I didn't even notice. Right. It goes. I wish I had a bed to sleep in. Because I have to sleep on the floor. And, you know, you think the kids got acne and all of this. I get fit by Roaches and rats. And dude, my inside was just like, so I didn't want to bring it up then or just immediately after. And so I told the principal and he goes, You gotta be kidding me. In a right so to suck, I was like, yeah. And he goes, tell you what I'm gonna do out of the principal fine. He paid for the four houses on that last trip of the street to get spray and pesticide and all that. So the kid would know it was just us doing it. Wow. And so when you get stories like that to me uh you know, you coach high school or coached high school to change kid's life and motivate these young men and having the opportunity in life. You do stuff like that, and you pet a you don't pat yourself on the back, because I'll keep doing it. I'll do it again and all that. But stories like that is the reason I will go back and coach high school football, I don't care about how many wins and losses, that's easy. I can just be that coach that are designed stuff because only you coach high school. And I tell all my friends, I'm a defensive guy. I go back to high school and coaching office, because these coaches play the same defense and information. They don't know nothing. Something they didn't went to a clinic and watch and they think they could do it. I will eat them up. Coaches like that. And stories like that. Would my heart's always open to go back and help a culture of young men as far as football players? I mean, now you know, we got the gym we've got we get guys got the guy that me and him are partners at the gym. He coached with no white guy. You know, every week I did something for these guys food wise. I don't care if you're having a campus security run the grill over we do hotdogs, we do leg quarters. So we order pizza, you know, every week when we play the game this during offseason leading up to the season. And I just remember my my business partner telling me coaching out there, we had the hotdogs and I'm talking about in the whole program, we probably had about 8090 freshmen, JV and varsity. I don't know maybe 300 hotdogs and guys getting two or three hotdogs, chips and the drink Gatorade. And kids telling him best meal I had all week. And he's just going like, wait a minute women. And you know why I had to go to the principal, I got a fridge, put it in my office. And I will go get food from after school program when the kids go and eat, get the milk and the little sandwich and all of that always had loaded food. I know these kids ain't eating at home. You know, I had a kid could never make the practice on Tuesday. Because his mom at a DUI class neither had to watch his sister and brother. You know, so little stories like that. Yeah, that's why I coach high school football coach to win. I mean, we're winning now don't get me wrong, but I'm gonna make sure that stuff, the opportunity to have fairness and chance in life without understanding what I'm telling you about a junior college, or you got to have these grades or you got to take the LSAT or, you know, you can't be out this you know, you're hanging out with these guys. And I got some friends you probably got some that hey, yeah, what's up, man? How you doing? Cool. All right, I'm out. You just got to know the little things in life, man. And that's why I told to high school. And that's probably be the only reason I go back into high school. Something like that.

What if you What if you got a call and say, hey, you know, Derek, we appreciate everything you're doing and we keep hearing your name. But we want you to come and be the strength and conditioning coach for this division one program.

Right now, that's a no. You can't even call me for NFL job right now.

I figured I started the college level. Let's see what the answer was going to be.

Is time is precious. And like I was talking to him. And I'm ended with this. And it was funny because me and my youngest son, I take him to school every day. Right? I just take them to school every day. And it's just like, we start having these conversations. And yesterday, I said, Hey, you know what today is right? He goes, it's Friday. I go exactly. I said, Wait, I said watch the clock and what tell me when it changes the time. And so he watched it. And then next thing, you know, it went pretty quick, you know, 30 seconds wherever he goes. And I said, Hey, that second that minute that we just lost. It was like 825. And I know it's now 820 seconds and we will never get that back. And you need to make sure that if you have an understanding of that, it will help you with a sense of urgency. Get the things accomplished in your life as you get older because I told him Hey, man, I'm not going to be here. There's going to be a time where I'm not here and I said Kevin, I need you to make sure get you straight.

And as you get older, there's milestones to just pass was 55 You're going like, alright, alright, let's see, I look, I gotta roll the 60s, granddaughter to be this age and dress me this age. Now I gotta eat a little better. You know, I gotta work out a little bit more. I gotta do this, I gotta do that. No, then when that milestone comes, if it comes, then you know it. Let's go 65. Right. You gotta do this. Got to do that. So you're right, man, is crazy. When you think of life that way. You can go five seconds and go. And you stood up, sit right back down next to me. So that's five seconds. We might not ever be able to do that again. Exactly. When you put it in that context, man, it's, every second of life is precious. There's guys who are no longer here. And we wish they had another five

seconds, I catch myself. And so and let me let me touch on that. When I was reached trying to figure out when I was texting. That time I was in Texas, and you told me what happened. I my wife and I literally had a conversation I and I was like, You know what, maybe I should reach out to reach out to his kid. Because I remember what our last season there the girl was pregnant and he was about to be a dad or, or something crazy, right? Something like that. So I reached out to her and I said, Hey, you don't know me yada yada yada. But I played with your dad. And she goes and she kind of just gave me the rundown man, like, you know, yeah, this is where he's at. And once she gave me like, the site, I wanted to go see it, but I didn't want to go see it. Because that right, because that because right there, that puts it that makes it final man that gives it that gives it a you know what I'm saying? That gives it a thing of its own meaning like, You got to accept Hey, your boy is gone. And like there's no reduce, like give and that's the thing I keep thinking about is like and that's why one of the main things I've been doing is like everybody that I that I've had in my life in some way shape or form. I have done everything I can to try to reach out to them and be like hey man, to express them hey, you know I appreciate you gotta gotta gotta and I get in like simply not turning into a SIP or anything like that but acknowledging the relationships that change shaped me the person that I am and this relationship there as even though we don't talk as much, but I really I really appreciated you Rodney, you know recipes IRA and and very Larry Jones his crazy self when he was you know, but it was those relationships that when I looked at the program last night, I was like, Man, I wonder what some of these cats are doing now. Like just looking at him.

About him. And he talked to me so is Marlon Swann had went to the JC where he's helping. But then LZ had got sick, I'm not sure if it's a stroke. I don't want to put that on him. But he got sick. And he was he wasn't able to coach he was just helping out and he couldn't stand for a while. He had to be in a wheelchair and he hated it and all of that. And then so this past season we coached right before we started, he said, You remember LZ Donner pretty little girl. She had died at COVID. And she was he was he was I mean done for the and I was like, You gotta be kidding me. Man. I you can have an arm and leg. Anything's me to die before all my kids that I can't. I can't. I can't do whatever I mean. And so it's like I can't reach out. I just remembered a girl band a little pretty little girl. And I had some young guys at the time. You know, you do the matchmaking when they're young. And he was like, He's shocked, man, he don't know what to do. He's not in a good place. I was like, when you talk to him, just tell him and my family's prayers are with his family. I can't I right now, I can't find the words. That's one of those things where you can't find the words to say. Sorry for your loss, because those words ain't good enough. You know what I mean? And I feel you probably know those words ain't good enough. So it's always hard for me. Because I'm so emotionally a piece of iron Oh, skill, it can take anything. And keep working type deal. That's what I call my emotions, you know, the cast iron black skillet, all the grandmas hat. That's my motion. Yeah, you know, my wife, you know me from like that, we need to get one of them non sticky things, you know, my cast iron, that thing, you can run over it with a car, you can throw it on some fire outside, on the grill inside and still keep working. So I just don't have the right words to say the sympathetic or I would I'd read to see you in person and give you a hug. You can feel my pain, feeling your pain or with that, but that tried to put the words the right way. At certain times. I don't feel like I can do it. So that's always hard.

Yeah, yeah. That is in man that and just talk about COVID Man, like that was a whole. That was a whole nother thing. You know what I'm saying? Like, it was just crazy. And then like the here, did you know like, this is this? You're the second person that I've talked to that, you know, with our six degrees of separation, right? Someone, someone Someone lost a child during COVID. And it was like, I was like, Man, how does this How am I'm like, How are we doing?

But the one thing that I tried, the one thing that I've been stuck on is you know, I would I couldn't I don't think I don't know how I would handle if I lost one. You don't. I'm saying like, I'm just being honest with you. Like we've had this conversation and you and Larry LZ was like, you know, you don't know, from up from down. But when you lose a child, man, it's like it's almost like a parent. It seems almost paralyzing. And I can't even imagine because, because I can tell you right now, I've told I've I mean, I've had nightmares and I woke up I told me I was like I'm shy. I said we got to make sure we get these boys to school man. We gotta we gotta get them to that phase of their life. Yeah, you know. And I just, it makes me nervous. And it's so funny, because when we moved into this house, I thought we were moving to a safer neighborhood. And then being have to be in here for 10 years, man, you start realizing, I mean, the Trump administration. I don't like saying that dude's name, but it was weird to see. The minute that he went down. I was like, people were drawing a line in a neighborhood. What are you guys doing? Like, there were dudes rolling through the neighborhood trying to beat a neighborhood was in a Humvee for deep. Like, that's what I was in. I was thinking to myself, I said, what did we I was like, gallon cops, man. You know what I'm saying? Like, I understand that, but I'm trying to circle back to that. Yeah, dude, our kids, like, are just, that's, that's, that's me.

On this earth right now is them and the grandkids. And you know, I'm the typical day. Most of the guy, it's funny to think about this. You know, I always try to spread a little. Everybody you know, and you call a friend are put on 99.9% of the time are great fathers. And we'll probably do anything to protect that family. And you ain't got to do that. I go spend 10 years in jail right now to take care of this right now. You know what I mean? You don't want to get extreme with it. But I tell the wife all the time.

So check this out. One time the wife 100 was in mini camp. And his wife had just left our house She calls a grandpa. We I mean, they got they're in a neighborhood where the neighbors watching they know them and they know ain't gonna happen. When she pulls up their door front door was wide open so she calls me Grandpa Grandpa for the grandkid, Grandpa our doors open. I made it there in four minutes and I was like, Oh poor get to school right down the street. I'll be there. He's like, I was like earlier. I'm walking in the house dog. Hey, now you got no weapon in that man and somebody is talking about the beat. But you know what I mean? No fear, no thoughts that I'm protecting this family. She's with Ben at the time and three year old ain't going down like this. I'm checking closets and pantries and your dude. I mean, I'm on this earth to protect you man. You know and I take that that job we're trying but that's that's the kind of a go and I tell my wife that because we know all kinds of people through sports. And you know my wife coach softball, she's the highest school head basketball and a high school softball coach. And it's funny that now we see kids we've coached with families and doing good in life in you know, try now to make a difference in life like hopefully that we touched their lives and put a positive spin on it. We're getting to see all of that, but I'm still the ultimate protector. This family
